Voici le résumé de ma Thèse de Doctorat du Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, soutenue le 26 avril 2007, intitulée:
Systématique de la tribu des Ixoreae (Rubiaceae) : phylogénie, biogéographie et taxonomie.
Les Rubiaceae (famille du café) sont l’une des plus importantes des plantes à fleurs, avec environ 14000 espèces pour 700 genres. La tribu des Ixoreae est un groupe récemment reconnu dans ses relations et sa délimitation. Ses membres avaient été préalablement placés dans une autre tribu nommée Pavetteae. Une première étude de phylogénie moléculaire fondée sur un marqueur chloroplastique, incluant la majeure partie des anciens genres de Pavetteae, a permis de vérifier l’indépendance des Ixoreae et de déterminer leur position au sein de la sous-famille des Ixoroideae. A l’issue de cette étude confirmant l’isolement des Ixoreae, une deuxième analyse phylogénétique basée sur des marqueurs chloroplastiques a permis d’établir des relations de parenté claires entre genres, aboutissant à la description de deux nouvelles tribus fortement apparentées aux Ixoreae : les Aleisanthieae (pour les genres Indonésiens Aleisanthia, Aleisanthiopsis et Greeniopsis), et les Greeneeae (pour les Greenea d’Asie et Spathichlamys d’Indonésie). Cette phylogénie a ainsi permis d’étendre les Ixoreae aux genres Captaincookia de Nouvelle-Calédonie, Doricera et Myonima des Mascareignes et Versteegia de Nouvelle-Guinée, en plus d’Ixora. Ce dernier est numériquement le troisième genre de Rubiaceae, avec environ 500 espèces tropicales. Il apparaît polyphylétique dans ces analyses. La première phylogénie moléculaire du genre a ensuite été effectuée afin de préciser les relations d’Ixora avec les autres représentants des Ixoreae. Les résultats ont permis de confirmer la polyphylie d’Ixora au sein de la tribu, en mélange avec les espèces des genres Captaincookia, Doricera, Hitoa (Polynésie française), Myonima, Sideroxyloides (Caraïbes), Thouarsiora (Madagascar) et Versteegia. Ixora a donc été élargi à toutes les espèces du clade des Ixoreae, rendant la tribu monogénérique. La plupart des sous-genres et sections d’Ixora a également été trouvée polyphylétique. Par contre, les divers sous-clades d’Ixora au sens large apparaissent cohérents géographiquement : une lignée des Mascareignes, une lignée afro-malgache, une lignée sud-américaine, une lignée océanienne, et deux lignées asiatiques distinctes. D’après une analyse de datation par horloge moléculaire, les Ixora, d’origine probablement malésienne, dateraient d’environ 20 Ma (Miocène), avec un début de diversification des ensembles actuels aux alentours de -14 Ma. Les données phylogénétiques et de datation ont conduit à l’établissement de scénarios biogéographiques pour chaque groupe étudié.
Une étude de spécimens d’herbier portant sur environ 350 espèces a permis une description détaillée de la diversité morphologique du genre Ixora nouvellement délimité. Sur la base de ces données, le genre Patabea de Guyane française a également été inclus dans Ixora. A la lumière des relations phylogénétiques, des schémas évolutifs et adaptatifs de la morphologie et de l’écologie des espèces ont été proposés, notamment pour la lignée océanienne. Cette approche a également permis d’appréhender les phénomènes de spéciation au sein de la tribu, et a mis à jour un probable événement d’hybridation à l’origine de la lignée de l’espèce-type d’Ixora, I. coccinea.
Tout au long de cette étude, un certain nombre de taxons nouveaux ont été répertoriés, dont quelques-uns ont été décrits. Une attention particulière a été portée aux statuts de conservation dont la plupart ont révélé les menaces encourues par les espèces d’Ixora concernées.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
