Rubiaceae myrmécophiles de Nouvelle-Calédonie
Nouveau projet d’après thèse, la co-évolution plante insecte est un sujet de recherche passionnant et probablement prometteur. Voici le résumé de ce projet qui débutera par une mission d’étude dans le Pacifique.
La famille du Caféier (Rubiaceae) constitue probablement l’une des familles les plus diversifiées dans les îles de l’océan Pacifique. Au sein de ce groupe de plantes, quelques genres se sont adaptés à la coexistence avec des espèces de fourmis, notamment en Papouasie Nouvelle-Guinée et à Fidji. Ces genres n’étant pas connus des autres îles du Pacifiques, il a été longtemps estimé que la Nouvelle-Calédonie, comme l’Australie d’ailleurs, n’abritaient pas de Rubiaceae myrmécophiles. Récemment, le genre Psydrax (Vanguerieae ; Bridson 1987 ; Reynolds & Henderson 2004) a fait l’objet de plusieurs études taxonomiques. Quelques espèces ayant développé des chambres ou galeries myrmécophiles ont, à cette occasion, été répertoriées soit 3 en Afrique tropicale et 3 en Australie. Sur le continent australien, une collaboration entre les botanistes et les entomologistes a abouti à la description de deux espèces de Psydrax myrmécophiles, endémiques du continent, d’une espèce de fourmi inféodée au genre Psydrax et d’un genre nouveau (Torarchus endocanthium ; Gullan et Steweart 1996) de cochenilles élevées par ces fourmis dans les chambres développées par de ces plantes.
Le genre Psydrax est en cours de révision au MNHN pour la Nouvelle-Calédonie, et compte pour le moment deux espèces, P. odorata (G.Forst.) Sm. & S.P.Darwin, arbre des forêts littorales du Sud de la Grande Terre, à l’Ile des Pins et aux Loyautés, et P. paradoxa (Virot) Mouly, sous-arbrisseau des maquis ultramafiques du Nord de la Grande Terre. Au moins trois espèces supplémentaires, arbustives de forêts sèches et sclérophylles, sont à décrire pour la côte Ouest de la Grande Terre. Des études de terrain ont montré pour la première fois que les représentants de chaque espèce de Psydrax de l’archipel possèdent eux aussi des chambres myrmécophiles, ce qui a été décrit dans une récente publication (Mouly 2006). Pourtant, les fourmis qui pourraient potentiellement habiter ces renflements dans les tiges n’avaient pas été observées. Suite à l’étude des échantillons d’herbiers à Paris, des fourmis ont été retrouvées dans une seule chambre myrmécophile de P. odorata, et sont actuellement en cours d’identification. Le genre (Podomyrma) de fourmis australiennes dont une espèce vit sur Psydrax n’est pas recensé en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Il est donc possible que celles-ci appartiennent à un tout autre groupe, tout en étant également inféodées à ces plantes.
Ainsi, le projet d’étude a plusieurs centres d’intérêt :
- D’une part une mission de terrain permettrait de collecter les plantes et les peuplements de fourmis et autres insectes qui leur sont associées, dans le but de déterminer précisément le nombre d’espèces de Psydrax sur l’archipel et de déterminer la ou les espèces de fourmis qui les habitent et les possibles organismes qui leur sont associés. Des échantillons destinés à des études biomoléculaires seront également récoltés.
- Effectuer les traitements taxonomiques nécessaires tant pour les Psydrax que pour les fourmis et autres insectes.
- Effectuer une étude de phylogénie moléculaire du genre Psydrax (inexistante à ce jour) afin de définir les schémas évolutifs de la myrmécophilie dans le genre. En Nouvelle-Calédonie, seules des chambres myrmécophiles isolées semblent se développer, alors qu’en Afrique et en Australie, les tiges sont entièrement modifiées en galeries. La phylogénie permettrait également de tester l’apparition de chaque type d’adaptation.
- S’il y a lieu, une phylogénie de fourmis pourra être effectuée afin d’effectuer une comparaison croisée des adaptations aux milieux, aux hôtes ou habitants des organismes.
Dans cet objectif, des échantillons de Psydrax sont déjà disponibles pour l’Afrique, Madagascar, l’Asie, l’Australie, deux espèces de Nouvelle-Calédonie, le Vanuatu et la Polynésie française (une trentaine d’espèces sur soixante). Il serait donc intéressant de disposer d’un échantillonnage complet des espèces néo-calédoniennes.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface.
